Endurance hugely changed the scope of building a base on your freighter, a feature which had been largely untouched since introduced in Foundation. It was especially exciting to be able to build exterior catwalks and observation decks - something not possible before...

Rendering windows and exterior walkways in space is a particularly hard technical problem. The moment we first saw the view from the deck, we just knew we had to support it.

In fact the way we built freighters initially used a lot of smoke and mirrors and this made it particularly hard to support most of these new features. For instance, newer players might not remember a time before you could teleport from the freighter hangar to the bridge... such a great quality of life improvement! Even just that simple feature required some real technical wizardry going on behind the scenes to make that work.
