Our Journey Continues

By 2022, No Man's Sky had been evolving for six years, and we had added a lot of new content and new layers. It was always important to us to keep the game accessible to new players. We wanted folks to be able to jump in and be excited by the possibilities of the universe, but not feel overwhelmed. Waypoint was a concentrated effort to more clearly surface information about the universe as you discovered it. We cleaned up the in-game catalogue, and added journal-style records of progress through the core narrative.
We also completely unpicked the concept of game modes, which had remained the same since the introduction of Permadeath back in Pathfinder. We tried to allow players to play exactly as they wanted, letting them focus on whatever their favourite area of the game was - basebuilding, exploration, resource acquisition, story, combat, survival - the game means a lot of different things to a lot of different people.
This is also when we launched on Nintendo Switch! We honestly weren't sure whether it was possible at first, but our crazy engine team tend to interpret the word "impossible" as "thrilling technical challenge"!
