Foundation was really the beginning of our journey. We had the idea to name our updates, and to give each one a sci-fi book cover. We always loved Asimov, and Foundation as a name felt like a fitting tribute, because this was going to also be a starting point we would build on. We liked the idea of letting players put down roots in an infinite universe, it wasn't really what players were asking for, but it has become fundamental to No Man's Sky as we know it now. We also introduced game modes for the first time: Normal, Creative, and Survival. With these changes Foundation pointed to our future, allowing players to find their own way to experience the universe. The whole thing was created in just three months under a lot of pressure, with just a handful of developers. This update was made in our old tiny office down near the River Wey in Guildford. We had no air con, a venomous spider who lived in the toilets, and failing internet.
