Seasonal Commentary: By 2017 we knew there was a core community of players who loved the game, and they were the people we deeply cared about. We desperately wanted to find a way to communicate with them and let them know we were listening, whilst we focused on the game. Then the thought came: we've always loved ARGs! What about an Augmented Reality Game? This became Waking Titan. We posted physical cassette tapes to 16 prominent members of the NMS community, and invited players to explore a website filled with cyphers and mysterious documents. Players travelled to real world live drop locations, and met with agents from the mysterious "Atlas Foundation". There was a live stream of a hamster. We loved it! Together with the ARG puppet masters, it felt like we were enjoying a game with friends in the community. Some of our ideas went a bit too far. We were advised that our insurance didn't cover inviting players into the studio and arming them with blowtorches to extract a key from an ice sculpture. We still think that would have been fine.
