Seasonal Commentary

No Man's Sky has always been a game about exploration and discovery, and players were often asking us to give them more variety on planets, more places to explore. But the difficulty is balancing that against players who are attached to existing planets. It broke our heart in the past when we changed generation and had people write in to say that they've named a planet or built a base in memory of a family member, and now that planet has a different climate or terrain shape or grass colour. So in Origins we took a two-pronged approach to refreshing the universe: we "remixed" existing biomes, vastly increasing the variety of landscapes players could encounter, and we added brand new planets so we could create dramatic new terrain shapes without disrupting anyone's bases. With new creature types, new buildings, and a huge injection of variety it really felt like stepping into a new universe for the first time. We also introduced huge sandworms, roaming the landscape, which have gone on to create some of our favorite moments with streamers and players over the years.
